I was never very rich, actually we were barely scraping by. But then the depression hit and I lost my job. We had no choice we had no money, no job and we were very hungry. Then one of my friends mentioned this train. It was going to California, I heard it was a paradice. When we got to the train it looked like everyone had the same idea as us. It was crowded and stinky, I lost sight of my wife as we tried to board the train. People are everywhere, hanging from the sides, some people are even falling back off the train. I can’t see more than a foot infront of me. The suns baking us, it’s unbearable. We had to leave our stuff behind because there was no room for it, not saying that we had that much stuff to leave. The only thing thats making me stay is a bekief that where were going we can start over. The trains starting, off to paradice we go.
I believe that everyone has the chance to live
the American Dream no matter where they start, as long as they work hard. It may be harder for some people, but it is possible for everyone to walk the American Dream. Most people need to make sacrifices to reach the American Dream. This can be working three jobs to your 30th to pay off your student loans, to cutting down on going out for dinner and everything in-between. This song is similar to The Necklace because both the singer and Mathilde’s family is barely scraping by and both the singer and Mathilde want to walk with everyone else and fit in. I am a bit surprised by the story because of how much money could
change the lives of people and how the story showed that. I feel that Mathilde is greedy and selfish because she wants everything, but isn’t willing to work for it. I am disgusted by her because she stays home and takes and takes from her husband and never does anything, but still want more and better. An example from the story is when she keeps asking if her friend had any better jewelry, even though she couldn’t afford even the cheapest piece of jewellery herself. |
